Coal Harbour Community

David Valente | June 14th, 2006 | Community,

Coal Harbour Neighborhood

Vancouver has a large number of distinct communities that are in part defined by the bodies of water that make up some of their borders.

Coal Harbour comprises of 23 acres and is the waterfront area that connects the downtown core to Stanley Park to the West. It is home to many pleasure craft berthed in several marinas. The area is also home to Vancouver's Rowing Club, established in 1899. The public areas from downtown to Stanley Park are in effect one long promenade which is connected to the Stanley Park Seawall which then continues to and around False Creek, a total approximately 20 kilometers of shoreline public access. The promende gives Coal Harbour residents easy access to the parks, running and bike trails.

Starting in the late '90's, this was the first residential neighborhood to be planned and built along Burrard Inlet. The area offers great views of the North Shore mountains, Stanley Park, Lions Gate Bridge and east to Canada Place, which houses Vancouver's Convention Centre and Cruise Ship Terminal. With its close proximity to Stanley Park, Denman Street, Robson Street and Vancouver's financial core, Coal Harbour has become Vancouver's most sought after waterfront condominium neighborhood. Many residents take advantage of the short walk to the Business District.

In addition there is an 8 acre waterfront park, a community centre, playgrounds and several restaurants. Float plane service from the foot of Burrard Street allows Coal Harbour residents a convenient means of reaching Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and points beyond. Vancouver's downtown heliport is also just minutes away - making Whistler, Victoria and Seattle (USA) a short helicopter commute from home.

On the west side of Coal Harbour sits Stanley Park, named after Lord Stanley, Governor General of Canada. Herein lies one of Vancouver's oldest hotels, The Bayshore, which is on the waterfront. Howard Hughes held up here in the 1960s! Slightly to the west of the Bayshore lies Bayshore Drive and its 4 condo buildings to the south (1790, 1710, 1680 and 1650 Bayshore Drive) and 2 on the waterfront (1717 and 1777 Bayshore). 1616 Bayshore is under construction.

Then we pass the Hotel and arrive at 560 Cardero, The Avila and 535 Nicola The Bauhina, which were the next 2 buildings to be built. Sitting east of The Bauhina is Waterfront Place, with Dockside (Coal Harbour's only live/work condos) behind it.

At Broughton we come to Denia, with its townhomes, across from the Community Centre. Behind the CC is Harbourside Park 1 and 11. To the east of Harbourside Cielo is under construction, which will be home to Urban Fare Grocery Store.

Under construction on West Pender is Flatiron and The Melville and The Ritz and Sapphire.

2 blocks south, on Thurlow and West Georgia, is North America's first Shangri-la Hotel/Condo, due for completion summer 2008.

The waterfront to the east of the community centre is Escala, followed by Callisto and Carina, all on the waterfront. Harbour Green III recently pre-sold. The furthest east on the waterfront is The Shaw Tower. Coming soon will be The Four Seasons Condo.

This brings us to the extension to The Vancouver Convention Centre, presently under construction and it will house the media for 2010 Winter Olympics. And finally we are at the Waterfront Hotel and Pan Pacific Hotel.
