Transportation Plan: North Shore and Vancouver

Transportation North Shore

Three-year plan & 10-year outlook

TransLink is now into the second-year commitments outlined in its 2005–2007 Three Year Transportation Plan.  The implementation of road and transit improvements in the plan is on target, and in response to rapid ridership growth, we have accelerated transit service expansion.


Improvements for the North Shore include:

· Major road and transit corridors to and from the North Shore will be improved.

· Better transit, with rush hour frequency of 10 minutes or better for 70% of North Shore residents.

· A new transit operating centre to house more buses.

· New Community Shuttle minibus connecting Lions Bay, Horseshoe Bay and Caulfeild village.  New Community Shuttle minibuses for Seymour and Deep Cove neighbourhoods.

· New pilot marine services for Bowen Island and Ambleside to downtown Vancouver.

· Capilano College will become eligible to join the VanCity U-Pass.

· Third SeaBus planned for 2009.

· Dollarton Bridge twinning completed this year.

· Main Street widened for better access to the Second Narrows Bridge in 2008.

· $5.5 million over the next three years to operate, maintain and improve the North Shore's major arterial roads.

· The "next generation" North Shore Area Transit Plan will schedule service improvements for commuting to the rest of the region and travel on the North Shore.

· A new bus service opening in 2007 will provide North Vancouver residents direct connections to Metrotown SkyTrain station via BCIT and Brentwood Town Centre.

· Bowen Island and Lions Bay are now part of the North Shore fare zone. West Vancouver customers can use their West Vancouver Blue Bus transfer to travel on local transit in Lions Bay and Bowen Island at no extra cost.

Improvements for Vancouver and UBC include:

· New rapid transit line (the Canada Line) connecting Richmond, Vancouver and Vancouver International Airport, opening in 2009.

· TransLink will provide $22 million over the next three years for the operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of regionally significant roads.

· $11 million dedicated for left-turn bays at key intersections along the Knight Street corridor.

· $16 million seismic upgrade and general repair project on the Knight Street Bridge.

· More buses running more often, beginning in 2005 with more weekend and evening service and for back-to-school in September.

· New Summer VanCity U–Pass for UBC students beginning in 2005.

· New Community Shuttles including service for UBC in 2006.

· A brand new wheelchair-accessible electric trolley fleet consisting of 228 replacement vehicles arriving 2006 through 2008.

· New Vancouver Transit Centre in Marpole to replace Oakridge Transit Centre in 2006.

· Completion of VCC-Clark (Vancouver Community College) SkyTrain station and adjacent transit exchange in 2006.

· New limited-stop express bus service from Vancouver Community College to UBC following opening of VCC-Clark Station was introduced in 2006.

· Main Street transit and pedestrian improvements.

· Broadway & Commercial "Transit Village" with station and streetscape improvements for better cycling and customer access to SkyTrain and the 99 B-Line.

· Central Valley Greenway bicycle and pedestrian corridor, linking Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster.
