Organized Real Estate in Canada
Organized real estate in Canada operates at three different levels. The real estate board generally operates at a local level. Provincial and territorial associations represent their province or territory and CREA represents the industry nationally and internationally.
Federal (Crea)
- Represents the industry nationally and internationally
- Promotes a national legislative agenda that supports a vibrant real estate sector and furthers the interests of homebuyers and property owners
- Maintains Realtor® Code and other standards
- Provides arbitration services for disputes between associations, between members from different provinces
- Provides technology solutions to members
Provincial & Territorial (Provincial Associations)
- Handle membership processing and non-board areas
- Facilitate maintenance of board jurisdictions
- Resolve disputes between boards, members from different boards in the same province
- Provide continuing education courses
- Engage in political action activities at the provincial level
Local (Real Estate Boards)
-Process membership, set membership requirements and collect dues
- Operate MLS® System
- Develop and implement rules that support CREA’s national policies
- Enforce the Realtor® Code and other standards
- Provide arbitration services to resolve disputes between members
- Lobby municipal government
