Clarification Regarding Waterfront Heritage
Clarification Regarding Waterfront Heritage
The City wishes to clarify information regarding Council's recent decision to rescind Heritage Designation for three heritage structures on the City's portion of the Pier Development. While not all of the buildings could be preserved as part of the National Maritime Centre (NMC) concept, the City remains committed to the retention of a significant shipyard heritage precinct.
The structures and buildings within the dotted line on the map were designated by a municipal heritage bylaw in 1999.
Only the structures labeled Building 10 (also known as the Machine Shop) and Buildings 14 A, B and C (also known as the Wallace Machine Shop, Boiler House and Blacksmith Shop) are affected by the recent amendment as follows:
- A heritage alteration permit will be issued for Building 10, a steel frame structure, to allow it to be dismantled, stored and later re-erected to be used in a building at the same location.
- The heritage designation of Buildings 14 A, B and C was rescinded and they will be demolished. Portions of Building C which are steel will be retained, stored and re-erected as part of a new building. Building A cannot be retained due to deterioration of its wooden structure, nor can Building B. They will be replaced with new buildings.
These changes allow for dynamic compaction of the soils underneath the structures so that foundations can be built to current seismic standards at a savings of $6 - $10 million dollars. Dynamic compaction must be done this spring in coordination with the Pier development construction schedule. All other heritage designated structures shown on the map will be retained and are unaffected by the amendments.
