How long can you expect that new vinyl floor to last? Is your fridge good for a few more years? The National Association of Home Builders in the U.S. has compiled a list of estimated "expiration dates" of many of the appliances and materials in the home. Here is what you can expect:
Chimney – 100 years or more
Framing – 100 years or more
Wood Shingle Roof – 25 years
Tile Roof – 50 years
Acoustical Ceilings – 100 years
Smoke Detector – 12 years
Toilet Mechanism – up to 50 years
Cast Iron Bathtub/Sink/Toilet – up to 50 years
Ceramic Tiles – 100 years
Vinyl Sheet Flooring – 20 to 30 years
Gutters and Down Spouts – 30 years
Wood Siding – up to 200 years (but can fail in 10 if exposed)
Wood Deck – 15 years
Terrazzo Floors – 100 years
Refrigerator – 17 to 20 years
Electric Range/Gas Oven/Stove – 17 to 20 years
Microwave Oven – 11 years
Drywall and Plaster – up to 70 years
Dishwasher – 10 years
Garbage Disposal/Trash Compactor – 10 years
Masonry/Fireplaces/Mantels – 100 years
Exterior Doors – 100 years or more if protected
Oak or Pine Floors/Stairs – 100 years
Water Heater – 10 to 15 years
Basement Concrete Floor – 100 years or more
Gas-Fired or Oil Furnace – 15 to 30 years
Washer and Dryer – 13 years
Central Air Conditioning – 11 years
Asphalt Driveway – 10 years
Garage Door Opener – 10 years
Septic System – 30 years
